Production Engineer at Braintree (Chicago, IL)

Braintree is growing the team and we're looking for world class engineers with extensive experience, aptitude and drive to help us run our software at the high level of availability required for processing payments.  Our engineers work on the core of our payment processing systems and operate the hardware, software, and networking infrastructure that powers the platform handling our customers’ most valuable transactions.  Our goal is to have every change to a production server driven through puppet or other automation tools.  Successful candidates need experience and comfort working with and operating a variety of technologies that power high-scale, high availability transactional systems and passion about systems that operate reliably via great engineering, automation, and monitoring.

How we work

We are team based...

We work in an open team room; no cubicles or private offices. Communication is key to our process, and we don't want to hinder it with walls. We work directly with coworkers as well as clients to triage, design, and solve the business's technical challenges. The key to our strong team is transparency and responsibility. Expect Zen gardens instead of walled gardens.

We love Unix philosophy...

We embrace Unix systems from the production clusters down to the desktop. Single purpose, well designed tools are always preferred over the combination wifi-coffee-maker-ping-pong-table. We enjoy the stability and flexibility Unix based systems provide. You will find us swimming in technical solutions, that keep the business engaged and moving forward.

We work on challenging problems...

You will find us debugging dynamic routing protocols, writing nagios checks for an NTP servers, deploying new production VLANs, assembling and boot strapping new database hardware, and tweaking the office 802.11b channels to avoid a noisy microwave all in the same day. Our responsibility is to ensure the technology supports and accelerates our business. Stability, scalability, fault tolerance, and automation are key properties of our solutions. We strive to provide our clients with 100% system availability, as we don't make money unless our clients do.

We are agile...

Agile development methodologies mean different things to different people. For us, the most important part of Agile is doing what works best for the team. We have a story card wall and release a few times a week. We keep the team in sync with daily standups and have a retrospective once a month to discuss things that are going well and opportunities for improvements. We’re pragmatic, not dogmatic. Although we have strong opinions, we're never afraid to try to new things to see if they work and reconsider our positions if the situation warrants it.

We value our people...

We spend half a day every week working on whatever we’re interested in, regardless of whether it's relevant to the business. Some examples of the things people have chosen to work on include competing against each other to build a mesh chat client in node.js, contributing to open source projects, and discussing strategies for our Google AI challenge submissions.

Salaries are generous and compensation packages include 401k contributions, and ample vacation time.
Interested?

We're looking for people who are interested in getting in on the ground floor of an incredible opportunity to design and implement a high-availability infrastructure that powers the best of the payments industry.

Take a look at some of our blog posts to see some of the problems we face:
http://www.braintreepayments.com/inside-braintree/how-we-built-the-software-that-processes-billions-in-payments

Take a look at some of the code we have on github:https://github.com/braintree
